Reading in the dark of night
So the last few nights, I've been naughty.
I've been staying up very late, reading books on my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy SII with Moon+ Reader Pro on it, which gets very dark so I don't disturb my TD too much while he is trying to sleep. It wouldn't be so bad, but I keep reading kind of cheesy horror novels.
During the night from March 10th to March 11th, I read Ten by Gretchen McNeil. It's about a group of ten teens who are invited to a party on an island under false pretenses. Yes, in reality they are lured there to be killed off one by one. The premise isn't all that original, but I thought the writing was entertaining, and it was enough to get my brain a-ticking. I'm slightly embarrassed to admit this, but I had a little trouble falling asleep after I finished the book. The descriptions of the corpses in this novel were very good, and my brain went and ran with it. Never mind that it invoked a bit of Japanese horror movie aesthetic, and if there is one thing from a horror movie that is bound to get my heart thumping faster, it is the creepy girl from Japanese horror films¹. So I finished the book, and then thought about innocent, nice things. There is nothing like trying to convince your own imagination that the unicorns are nuzzling kittens, and everything is sweet and beautiful. All my imagination kept wanting to give me was beheaded unicorns staring at me with dead eyes and lolling tongues.
Sometimes, my imagination is a jerk.
Last night, the 11th in to the 12th, I read Freeze by Daniel Pyle. It only seemed fitting since we were once again being warned about snow coming². This book.. yeah, what to say about it. A man, a woman, and their dog are snowed-in in a house up in the mountains. Some sort of ice monsters come out to get them? This is a basic creature horror story. We don't get any explanations or anything like that. It's an okay genre for movies, but I found it a little shallow and boring for a book. The writing itself was entertaining, and with what little we get, the characters came across very well. I'll definitely be reading more from Daniel Pyle. Hopefully he has some things that have a little bit more depth, and will keep me up a little bit after reading it.¹Look, I know the Grudge was not a good movie, but holy shit, the actress who played the ghost creeps me the fuck out. It's the combination of the sounds and the movements. Every single time. It's embarrassing.
²By the way, do I see any snow? No, not a bit. I get all these warnings, then nothing. I'm sick of this winter, and just want it to be spring now.
